So, our DD19 is currently residing in a very small, inpatient, residential treatment facility that is roughly 350 miles and 4 states away from where I live. Very long story short, there is another resident in the same house who lives with her parents not more than 2 miles away from me. My wife and I were driving up to see DD on Christmas Day, and we got a call from our DD asking if we would mind bringing a few things for their DD with us. The other couple came over early on Christmas morning to give us the items, and we chatted for a good bit, exchanging stories. I was so relieved to be able to almost instantly talk truth about this experience with other people that truly understood what we're going through. It was like having you guys in my living room. Don't get me wrong, out friends and families are great, but sometimes they just.can't.understand. I said long story short earlier, and sorry for making it longer, but we're going to dinner this weekend to decompress. I am so looking forward to it. It truly is a small world. You can be so honest without worrying they wont understand. Unless you have been thru it the average person cannot understand the depth of this disease and what it does to the whole family and not just the child . Good Luck with the new parents and hope it helps if anything just opening up without being guarded. As mggt said, no matter how sympathetic, others just don't "get it" unless they have been there.
And maybe this will work out well for your daughter and the other young woman. Having someone living close by who has been through the same treatment facility to encourage and support each other. Couldn't meet two weeks ago, last weekend I was on call and working all weekend, and this weekend RSW is going out of town. I have spoken to the mother in the other couple a few times, and we are getting together very soon. |
