Title: Looking for residential treatment center in TX for young adults
Post by: KT’s Ma on June 11, 2018, 08:02:39 PM
My daughter is 21 years old. We recently learned that she has been diagnosed with BPD.  Her therapist is recommending RTC. She doesn’t do well in group therapy. Tried IOP and PHP.
The therapist recommended RTCs in Illinois, NY and CA. We want something within driving distance: San Antonio, Austin, Houston.
I’ve tried googling but all I can find involve drug/alcohol rehab.

Any recommendations?

Hi KT's Ma

I have no personal experience I'm in the UK, I wonder if your local NAMI might provide you some guidance. Like you I'd want to be within driving distance.

Thank you wendydarling for your reply. It’s been quite a shock to see that the great big state of Texas seriously lacks mental health facilities. But it makes me feel better that someone is listening to my complaining.

Hi KT's Ma

I totally get you its shocking when you look at what's not available. When I joined here I regularly ranted on the outrageous lack of resources here, it's heart breaking … my DD was very, very fortunate - a 12 month waiting list (me holding my breathe, she was in crisis mode) for outpatient DBT, it was worth the wait, the team were absolutely brilliant, however many moved onto private practice just as my DD's treatment came to an end, and as far as we know they've not been replaced. My DD's on twitter, there are local people crying out, desperate for help, we've been there …. it's a moral scandal and the problem is growing. My DD's looking into the various lobby groups we can join... .

Have you looked here Psychology Today? I know others have used this resources in the past.

Is your daughter up for attending residential?

My daughter is apprehensive about going to residential but believes it’s what’s best for her. The only non-faith based centers that are not combined with substance abuse recovery programs are out of state.
Thank you for directing me to Psychology Today. It simplified the visit. DD comes home for a weekend visit today. She’s living in her college apartment although not attending college.
Again thanks for your help. X

Hi KT's Ma

You are most welcome, it's encouraging your daughter accepts residential is what's best for her. It's also a big step and understandable she's apprehensive, by you validating her feelings will show you understand, you have empathy for her, a true connection with what she is going through.  Are you familiar with the tools and lessons to your right?  |--->

It's at times like these I wish my DD could speak to yours, reassure and motivate her things can get better, work hard and she'll succeed, she really will and she'll be back at college if that's what she wants.

I think you've a couple of threads going, off to check out... .
