Title: Housing for Young Adult
Post by: loveandcare on November 26, 2018, 06:48:32 PM
Not sure if anyone can help, and of course every state in America is probably very different, but if anyone has any ideas, please let me know... .

We are looking for options for housing for our daughter. She is 18. I know that is very young to move out, but I don't think I can tolerate the behavior fro much longer so I would at least like to know what our options are. She is, quite frankly, unemployable. Her BPD makes her dysfunctional regarding a job. I believe she would qualify for disability. I just don't know where to turn or what to ask for.

Ideas? Thoughts?
Thank you

Hi Loveandcare,

There is often a waiting list but I've found a few "transitional" housing places in my area for people with mental illnesses. Often they accept Medicaid.

Medicaid would be easy for her to qualify for. Disability is a great option but I've heard it can take up to 18 months to be approved, and it's more difficult to qualify with mental illness than physical disability. That's anecdotal though, I have no experience with it.

You may also want to look into Job Corps for her.
