Hello,  I am the parent of a 17 year old daughter who has been diagnosed with OCD, Anxiety, Depression, Anorexia and now traits of BPD.  I think the BPD diagnosis absolutely fits what we are experiencing.  We were able to get the anorexia stabilized (weight restored and eating) but it continues to be part of her disorder.  She is currently working with a DBT program, once a week meets with a psychologist and once a week attends a parent/teen group.  She also meets with her nutritionist weekly.  Medications include Prozac and abilify, we are in the process of changing psychiatrists. 

My daughter is unable to attend school with any consistency.  She used to be a high achieving student and currently has incompletes in all classes.  She engages in self harm, has suicidal ideations and displays reckless, impulsive behaviors.  We are concerned for her safety and are considering a short term residential placement in hopes that more intensive supports will improve her opportunity for recovery. 

We are also about to have her first CSE meeting and are confident she will qualify for an IEP and possible placement in a day program, therapeutic high school that is close by. 

I don't know where to begin with searching for a good residential program.  They are all so expensive, most don't seem to accept insurance and if we are going to drain her college account to pay for this, would like to be sure we are selecting the right one.

Any advice is much appreciated.  We live in the NY tristate area.

Welcome to the family.  :hi: I'm glad you found us, you are reaching out for support.

We have lots of parents going through similar struggles who have walked the same path before you and some who are just starting out, you are not alone.  

As I'm in the UK I have no personal recommendations to offer you. I do know that some parents have selected around three/four residentials, called them to find out more and then visited. Here's a previous thread parents discussing RTC. TREATMENT: Residential Treatment / Intensive Outpatient Programme (https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?topic=126687.0). My 30DD attended weekly DBT (14month) like your daughter is, it's been very effective for her, she's presently joined a skills group for 20 sessions as a refresher. We're also looking into schema, mentalisation as a continuation of her learning. How's your daughter coping?

I'm glad to hear you've got the anorexia stabilised and understand when you say it continues to be part of her disorder. My DD's had many of the symptoms you describe and her eating disorder is one of the remaining symptoms she's tackling right now and doing well.

As you settle in here I hope you post and feel free to jump into other threads.  It can be a great help and will definitely help build a support network which is critical.

First, let me tell you welcome here and second, that YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Your daughter's bio reads like my DD20 from three years ago.

We went through all of the same things you are - depression, bulimia, self-harm (60 plus stitches in total), drugs, alcohol, risky behavior... .all of it.

We wound up sending her to Angelus House (Wellspring) in Connecticut, where she stayed for 7 months.  They specialize in women-only, with heavy BPD diagnosis (my DD was mis-diagnosed for 2.5 years as bipolar, general Anxiety Disorder, and a host of others.), and they only have 1-12 women there at once.

Staff is fantastic.

Please consider.  I wholly recommend.

about when would you say her academics started suffering?

how does she feel about the prospect of a residential treatment program, have you broached the subject yet?
