Title: Help with finding local group therapy for people suffering with BPD partners.
Post by: Sandb2015 on January 11, 2019, 11:07:51 PM
I’m just wondering if there are meetings going on in places that are a step closer to actual one on one therapy which I may or may not need later.

I would go if it’s a group, does it exist, is this illness so common that the mental health community recognizes it as widespread?

Any info on finding out where I could start?

I’m on this board all day, work (cry), bed (cry), commute (cry) and over and over. I’m feeling calmer, not healthier.at all.

i think that finding one on one therapy is a great idea, and its a great adjunct for support here.

this is a good resource for finding a therapist in your area: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists

Do you recommend that as opposed to group? I don’t know about my mental health insurance coverage and I know first hand, it could be pricey.  My thought was group is cheaper and a start prior to group.  I obviously have no idea.

I will search the resource.

Thank you

it would really depend on the kind of group therapy youre looking for.

there arent a lot of widespread support groups like this one, in terms of a therapeutic setting. the closest you might find are al anon meetings, codependents anonymous, NAMI meetings if theyre in your area, that sort of thing. if your goal is improving the odds of reconciliation and then improving on that, i think youre in the best place around, and that a one on one therapist would really help.

After thinking about, I will seek one one one and I've read that I should find someone who specializes in BPD.

About a year ago I did get my love to seek counseling, she wanted to "fix" and it was a disaster.  Because of medical coverage her choices were limited and she saw someone who told her right away, she doesn't have an issue, that it's okay to not like things about your partner or his "past".  She went twice and the "counselor was going to be out for 6 weeks and my love got her ideas reinforced and didn't want a revolving type of counseling.  That was something so detrimental.  I knew I would never get her to go again, but she did go and she did think something was wrong.

I'm hoping this time apart gives some reflection and not just working on erasing me.

most therapists use a lot of validation in the initial stages of the therapist/client relationship, especially when they can sense the patient has a personality style that needs a lot of it. that might have been part of what she/you experienced.

find a therapist skilled in validation, and teaching it to you, but one that will challenge you.
