Title: Selecting GAL
Post by: yeeter on December 17, 2019, 03:51:22 PM
Based on behaviors during initial couple weeks of filing for divorce, my lawyers are pushing for a request for a GAL (psychiatric not an attorney).

I am supporting it, although it is a path/can of worms I had hoped to not go down.  One aspect that is concerning is that 'most' people have never really experienced a high functioning person, and thus takes some time (considerable at times) before it comes out.  She is quite skilled at presenting a perfect front, and smart as heck.

My question is:  How can we find the right GAL?

With the couples counselors, it took considerable effort and time to find someone with the background to 'get it' quickly.  Otherwise a lot of time and energy wasted for no benefit (or at times backwards benefit).

Any suggestions?

How are GALs typically selected in your area? Are you and your lawyer able to get ahead of this and interview enough candidates to present three from whom your STBX could select?

One of the interview questions would be around experience with high functioning people with PDs.

What does a GAL who is not a lawyer do?  i'm only familiar with the ones who are lawyers.
