Title: getting a clue...
Post by: 3step on March 03, 2020, 09:04:36 PM
I have just read the eggshells book and am wondering how to go about helping my SO to think about getting help. There seem to be quite a few "recovered BPs", which sounds encouraging! We've been together 35 years.

Welcome to the family!

If you’ve read SWoE, you’re off to a good start. It’s what led me here. You’ll also find that this site has a real wealth of resources and information that can help you. When you have time, I’d recommended looking around using the links at the top. Reading, posting and asking questions on the boards are also good ideas. We’re here to help and learn from each other.

As to your question, has your wife been diagnosed? Is she aware you suspect BPD? I ask because if the answer is no, we advise NOT telling her. It seems like our loved one would be relieved but that rarely the case. It generally does not go well. If she does know, that’s a different matter.

Regardless, I’d recommend reading this article:

Getting a pwBPD into therapy — and then them sticking with it through the long, difficult process — is not easy. But there have been success stories.

No she has no idea that I suspect this. I understand about not telling her too! Group DBT is apparently the way to go (regular therapy has been a non starter) but how to plant the idea is the question.

I’d check out the link I posted as a way to start. You may also want to read around the boards a bit. You’ll find there are a lot of members with the very same question!

35 years is a long time!

tell us more about what youve been going through in that time.
