Title: Wondering if pwBPD struggle with refined carbs, sugar
Post by: PeaceMom on March 06, 2020, 01:05:44 PM
We’ve recently learned thru a Psychiatrist that refined carbs and sugar can very seriously affect brain function. I’m not at all surprised by this anecdotally, but am not used to hearing this from a doctor. My DD is not willing to make dietary changes to try to help herself, but I am curious if others have noticed an addiction to these in their pwBPD. From the day we adopted her in Asia, we’ve seen the huge draw of processed carbs and sugar in her life.

Oh, yes, my daughter is the same. When she was much younger, I would find empty ice cream containers in her bedroom. She was adopted, too, and I know that her foster family fed her refined carbs and sugar when she was with them.

She has been told by her doctor that she tends to get low blood sugar. She's supposed to eat throughout the day but doesn't pay much attention to that. When she's home, I give her vitamins that help stabilize blood sugar. I know she doesn't take them in college, although she has them with her. Sometimes when she calls me really upset about something, I'll say it sounds like your blood sugar is low. Then she'll realize she hasn't eaten all day. Usually it's true, but also it's more acceptable to her than saying you're acting like your bpd is out of control.  Purely anecdotal, but keeping her blood sugar stabilized does make a huge difference with my dd's emotions and behaviors.
