Title: 17 yr old daughter
Post by: hooch on June 20, 2020, 05:14:50 PM
My soon to be 17 almost 18 yr old daughter was recently diagnosed with BPD. She does not want to go to therapy. She left home but came back.  She is working. How do we get her to continue with therapy? We are not letting her use the car unless she goes to therapy. We also need a family support group.
Thank you

Hm that is a tricky one.  I can only speak from my own experience, my dd would have been extremely resistant to anything that is not her own choice.  Maybe putting some boundaries around behaviors that affect you, and having one of the consequences for those behaviors be a choice of either no car or therapy?  So that its not that you are just forcing her to get therapy, but that its an optional consequence for some behavior that legitimately affects you?

Just a thought.  I find that meta reasoning and logic is a way to connect, even though we might see things extremely differently, having at least a level of mutual respect that we have our own spheres keeps things calmer.  But that might be just me!
