Title: How to Help my 21 year old young adult Misdiagnosed
Post by: Never Giving Up on March 03, 2021, 09:16:49 PM
 :hi:
New here.. I have a 21 year old son, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.  I've been a part of some bipolar support groups and now believe that my son has been misdiagnosed.  Most of the issues in the bipolar support group is around the areas of mania, of which I can't relate.  I've never experienced my son appearing manic for over an hour at a time.  I'm curious if anyone here has a child who was misdiagnosed as bipolar, that you subsequently discovered had BPD?
And also, he has gone through so many jobs, in and out of schools, etc.  We try hard to support anything he starts but nothing holds his interest long enough and he's too exhausted most mornings to get out of bed on time for anything.  Any tips/suggestions?  Will it always be this way?

Thank you.

Welcome,
Many times psychs will not diagnose a teen with BPD due to the ever growing brain, hormones, etc.   It is not unusual to have a few different diagnoses before the BPD one comes into play once the child becomes an adult.  It has happened to my son as well.  In my case, though, it turns out my adult son has both a mood disorder as well as BPD.  Sometimes more than one mental illness exists.
