Title: I need help
Post by: Clen on March 07, 2021, 01:34:50 PM
Hi! My child has just been diagnosed with BPD. I need help to understand BPD. Her doctor recommended a book that I started to read. The title is Stop Walking of Eggshells. I really like it. Any advice? Thank you in advance. I look forward to learning from all of you.

 :hi:

"Walking on Eggshells" is basically the "BPD 101", it will usually be the wake-up call for people that "Wow, there's a name for my crazy relative? This sounds so accurate to my life!". It's not the best book out there, but it's the most famous by far; and it will groom you towards accepting DBT/CBT is the answer to all Borderline problems (it's not always, but a sizable percentage of people say it's the best improvement they've seen).

Is your daughter in the 15-25 range? That's certainly when it's usually first noticed and a name can be put to it. One problem with diagnosing BPD in younger children is that many of the traits of BPD are normal for children; all children have unstable senses of identity as they build one, nearly every 7-year old lacks long-term thinking, etc.

Hi Clen,

"Stop Walking on Eggshells" was my "gateway" book into BPD, and I think that's the case for many people. There are some great resources in the Tips and Tools sections of this site. Many are relatively short videos or articles which can be consumed in small doses and as needed. And many of the posts on this board will resonate with you - they certainly have for me.

Knowledge is power in this thing. I've found the more I learn about BPD, the more effectively I've been able to deal with the chaos.

Keep learning, and keep interacting here. You are not alone!
