Title: Is it a characteristic for individuals with BPD to isolate
Post by: doug914 on April 28, 2021, 09:29:23 PM
My daughter (15) spends every second alone in her room if she is not at school or with friends. As soon as she can be alone she heads to her room.
On a Saturday she will spend all day alone. I know teenagers like to spend time by themselves but this is very extreme.

Hello Doug and welcome  :hi:

Yes as you say, teens can tend to isolate in their rooms for privacy and independence. Some people with BPD like their space to self care and that may be considered as isolating.

What's happening Doug? Are there other behaviours, symptoms concerning you?

My stepdaughter often stays in her room, only coming out for food.

For about a year and half she stays in her room ALL the time. When we asked her about it she says it’s because of me. She is determined that she can’t stand to be around me.
I Just hate to see her spend so much time alone.

Hermits are hermits to cope with emotional pain by withdrawing. What does she say when you ask her why she can't stand to be around you? No judgement here by my asking.

My 14yo also spends all her time alone in her room. The problem is that she's not actually alone- she's on social media but a steady diet of that only complicates things.

What I have learned so far- the next time my daughter is hospitalized will be the start of a clean break with social media. I feel this can't be stressed enough. I wanted to have more control but my optimistic husband thought she could handle it. That was a mistake.
