Title: Not sure where to start? Post by: Encourage on June 23, 2021, 12:31:29 AM My husband suffers from bpd. We are in counseling but our counselor seems unsure of what to do. We talk an pray. Not much on what to do. I am reading the book Stop walking on Eggshells and it helped tremendously. Well I’m still reading it. It’s a lot to process but at least I know I’m not losing my mind.
My biggest issue is self care. I’m exhausted. Title: Re: Not sure where to start? Post by: pursuingJoy on June 23, 2021, 01:45:51 PM Encourage, welcome. It is so overwhelming at first. We can relate.
Glad you got SWOE! What makes you say your counselor isn't sure what to do? Do you know if they're trained to treat people with BPD? Is you husband accepting of his diagnosis? Take this one day at a time. You're going to get through this. Title: Re: Not sure where to start? Post by: Encourage on June 26, 2021, 01:42:26 AM Thank you, Pursuing Joy! The hard part is the day by day sometimes. The not knowing what's around the corner.
I believe our counselor did not want to believe my husband had any mental concerns. He over spiritualized things at first. However, after my husband agreed to get tested it was clear he was struggling. We are currently in separate sessions now. My husband has partially excepted his diagnosis but wants to convince everyone he is no longer that person. He also suffers from PTSD. Title: Re: Not sure where to start? Post by: pursuingJoy on June 28, 2021, 10:24:34 AM From the counselors I've spoken with personally and what i've read here, it's really important that your husband see a counselor who is experienced in treating pwBPD should he seek treatment. It's a unique disorder that requires specialized knowledge. It's common for counselors to underestimate BPD, or to treat from a misinformed place.
No expert but it seems like BPD is often diagnosed with other disorders like PTSD and depression and anxiety. It's a lot to take in, isn't it? How are you feeling these days? |
