Title: Needing some help for treatment BPD15 Post by: Needhelp21 on September 27, 2021, 07:12:44 PM I have a 15yo son who was recently diagnosed with BPD. Behaviors have continued to increase in severity and was just admitted to hospital on fear of harming himself…had plan laid out and all the pieces to go through. We are looking into residential care for when he is released. We are from the Midwest and I am curious if anyone has recommendations on where to start for a residential DBT facility for adolescent.
We feel lost on where to start. Title: Re: Needing some help for treatment BPD15 Post by: formflier on October 03, 2021, 05:58:25 PM *welcome* So sorry you guys are having to go through this. How long have BPDish behaviors been going on? When you ask the place where he is now the question you have posed here..what do they say? I can tell you that the residential programs need stability before they'll consider an application. By stability, they were looking for no self-harming, no serious dysregulation, no running, etc.. Our dd meet that mark, so no program would take her. Instead, we were directed to a stabilization program. The programs were either hospital-based or wilderness-based. The hospital ones were shorter (4-6 weeks) and more intense, but a director at a residential program recommended a wilderness program (10-14 weeks) because they get more time to practice new skills. We were told that kids coming out of wilderness seemed more stable than out of hospital.
Our daughter did the wilderness thing but was discharged early because she wasn't engaged and they didn't see progress. So there is the definite risk that you pay for a program and then can't complete it. After that, we would have hired an educational consultant to help us pick out the right residential program. And after that, we would have been looking most likely at a therapeutic boarding school. It takes time to rewire the brains of these kids, particularly the really smart ones. I wish you great luck. |
