Title: any luck with 12-step/AA programs?
Post by: incadove on November 23, 2021, 03:44:50 PM
Hey all

I've been reading about AA, partly just out of interest and partly I think my dd may have a drinking problem.  It seems like a really healthy community and approach.  But I'm not sure if it will fit with the bpd mindset, if that is what she has.

Has anyone had their adult children have any success with a 12-step or AA type approach?

And if so how did they get introduced to it, what made them willing to try?

Thank you all!

I am not sure how the AA program transfers to BPD. However, if you think there is an alcohol problem I think it is worth trying.

Something like that would not suit my BPD dd - the reason is that there would be so many triggers for her to 'lose it' ie her anger level would rise so quickly if something was said that didn't suit her.

BPD treatment is more focused on the individual being able to have strategies to deal with triggers when they occur.

If you think alcohol is the core problem though, there is certainly nothing lost in trying out the support of the group. The starting point however is that the person has come to the point of wanting to do this.

I hope things work out.
