Title: Looking for support
Post by: Boudiga on June 27, 2022, 02:38:30 AM
Hello group

I have been partnered for 13 years to a man I love very much. He has severe, chronic PTSD (ex-military) overlaying BPD. Life is full of highs and lows very dependent on his moods.

I am hoping to learn from others about how to manage this rollercoaster better.

Hi Boudiga, glad you found us and reached out. 13 years is a long time to "ride the rollercoaster", especially when your loved one has multiple conditions going on.

Can I ask, were either or both the PTSD and BPD "official" diagnoses? If so, how has he handled getting that info? Some people reject and block out the labels; others find it affirming to know the condition has a name and treatment.

Or, is it more like "Well, I've noticed him doing ABC and having traits XYZ, and after some reading, BPD seems to fit, even though no doctor has told him that"?

Either is OK here. I think you can probably relate to the idea that no matter whether there's a diagnosis or not, it's what your partner is saying and doing that's the real challenge.

And do you guys have any kids?

Let us know how you're doing, whenever works for you. This is definitely the right place to learn how to manage things better and make your life "less worse". We can take it one step at a time.
