Title: Level FIVE?
Post by: msheys on February 13, 2023, 12:45:27 PM
HI there,
My 15 year old has a working Dx of BPD and is being discharged from acute to a level 5 program...the only problem is finding a safe environment (at least to start) that is going to actually provide DBT and adequate treatment.  I'm extremely leery of programs located in parts of the US that are more conservative.  Looking for recommendations!

Thanks!
Mary

Hi msheys, welcome to the group. Glad you reached out for support and info -- I imagine it's taking so much out of you to navigate your teen's (likely) BPD diagnosis, PLUS treatment, PLUS finding a new facility, PLUS the impact on your family, to say nothing of the day-to-day of parenting a teen (which can be challenging under normal circumstances).

Am I tracking with you, that the current (acute) program is saying "your kid is done", and it's now on you to find the next step? Does the current program make referrals to certain other step-down programs? I.e., is there anyone on your teen's current care team who could point you to a good fit (like, Oh yeah, previous patients similar to your child have done well at Clinics A, B, and C)?

You can also consider contacting  McLean Hospital in Massachusetts (https://www.mcleanhospital.org/child-teen), which has a teen BPD program, DBT based, that many consider to be reputable and cutting edge. Even if you decide that McLean is not the best fit, my hope would be that you could talk with someone there who would have knowledge of other reputable programs that would fit your teen's needs.

Keep us in the loop on how you and your kid are doing, whenever works for you;
