Title: Adult child with BPD and substance abuse
Post by: Mom of BPD Girl on April 13, 2023, 08:56:48 AM
This is my first time here, my daughter was recently diagnosed with BPD and is also drinking and has been in the hospital a few times the last couple months. She moves back home then gets upset and moves back out. Moving from friends house to friends house.  It's very difficult to set boundaries because I'm afraid something bad will happen and I wasn't there to help.  Is anyone else experience this?

Hello MoBG and welcome to the boards  :hi: Glad you felt ready to share with us about what's going on in your life.

If your D is coping with both diagnosed BPD and substance abuse, that is a lot to handle for both of you, not just her.

Just a couple of questions to understand your situation a little better...

-how old is your D?
-has she seemed to accept her BPD diagnosis, or is she resistant to that?
-has she been compliant with hospitalizations?
-what's the bad thing you are afraid will happen if you set boundaries?

You're definitely not alone here in having a child with an unstable lifestyle, BPD, and substance use issues. Please do feel free to read through past threads, and also check out our "Tips" menu up top, especially the section on When a teen or adult child has Borderline Personality Disorder (https://bpdfamily.com/portfolio-child).

Hope you were able to have some moments of peace this past weekend, and again, welcome;
