Title: pwBPD and irritability with Adderall Post by: Easyreader on April 23, 2023, 04:24:52 PM Adult daughter, undiagnosed with symptoms of BPD and probably some Narcissism, began taking Adderall about 9 months ago. Her irritability level has sykrocketed. It feels like an angry mania most of the time. She takes a low dose and has been able to work at an outside job. She says the Adderall is the reason she has continued to work (I agree). She can focus. She believes she has adhd. I agree. I gently suggested that an atypical anti psychotic which had been a god send about 12 years ago might be a good add-on to help her cope. She told me I was never to bring up anything about meds in the future. She said that the anti psychotic had made her gain weight and so she couldn't "feel."
Has anyone else experienced this irritability/mania uptick with a BPD on Adderall? Thank you. Title: Re: pwBPD and irritability with Adderall Post by: MLA1 on May 08, 2023, 06:59:32 PM Oh my goodness - YES! I saw 'adderall' in your title and it really caught my eye.
my 25 yo son started on Adderall about 9 months ago and now his irritation is impressive. Just wired, though he it is up and down... But at this point his irritation has hit a new high. After having a really steady relationship with me (i'm the only one in the family he has been able to consistently manage to trust) he completely blew up at Christmas because we cleaned up his childhood room (he lives in his own apartment) and put his things in boxes while we cleaned and accidentally threw out a couple of small toys he hadn't touched in years. Yup - that was the reason. He left christmas morning and to this moment - so 5 months - he refuses to accept the presents we all got for him. He refuses to speak to anyone in the family, just responds to a couple texts, but very few. I called his psychiatrist to report the explosion, but my son, who is 25, insists he has never felt better now that he has adderall. It is a nightmare. It has been five months and he is still on adderall and I swear his logic and irritation is worse than it has been in years. I wish you much luck. Right now we are just sending neutral messages to keep the channel open and hoping this psychiatrist is aware enough of what has happened to move him into a new space over time. But we don't know. I have since learned that adderall should not be prescribed without tests that verify the need and I think with BPD it is really trick what the impact can be on emotional regulation... My son did not have any psychological tests - his doctor just took his word... It is not you - it is just a problem that I hope psychiatrists start to figure out doesn't work for BPD Title: Re: pwBPD and irritability with Adderall Post by: Easyreader on May 08, 2023, 09:21:21 PM MLA,
Thank you. I breathed a huge sigh just to know your story. Right now we are at the neutral text stage as well. I appreciate you taking time to reply. Blessings on you and your son. Thanks again. |
