Title: New Diagnosis
Post by: NowItMakesSense! on January 20, 2024, 10:45:19 AM
My 20-year-old son was recently diagnosed with BPD. Learning about this personality disorder has been SO validating for me. I finally have an understanding of the past 20+ years trying to parent him.

NowItMakesSense,

*welcome*

We are here to listen to you and emotionally support you.

Having a son recently diagnosed with BPD can be quite an eye opener to learn how his behaviors can be attributable to a personality disorder, this is the first step (of many) to deal with a person with BPD in your life.  Now that you finally have 'understanding', what do you intend to do with that 'understanding'?

There are many resources, including BPD Family, that can be helpful, and offer guidance from fellow peers who have 'been there, and done that'.  You are not alone, we understand how difficult this can be.

It is treatable, if your son accepts his diagnosis, and has a will to fix it - without either of these components present, it is up to his loved ones, specifically you to manage the impact his behaviors have on your life by setting firm boundaries on his behavior and communicating with empathy.

If you share your questions we will be able to better help you - you get as much or as little as you would like from this site.

If you are like us, you are likely emotionally exhausted from all of this, please be sure to be kind to yourself and practice self-care so you have enough energy to keep moving forward.

Welcome, and please keep coming back.

Take care.

SD

Hi NowItMakesSense!, we're glad you found us and that things are... making sense, finally.

My 20-year-old son was recently diagnosed with BPD. Learning about this personality disorder has been SO validating for me. I finally have an understanding of the past 20+ years trying to parent him.

How did your S20 respond to getting diagnosed? Did he seem accepting of it?

How's your relationship with him now?

Looking forward to learning more about your situation;
