Title: DENIAL

Hi Folks,
its been a while, I've been busy trying to promote  bpdfamily in the UK

I would like to discus ":)ENIAL" I think more needs to be done  to reduce stigma in this area and one of the things we need to look at is those in denial who never receive a diagnosis and in turn those closest to them are caught in confusion, often in abusive situations. We can't blame the BPD'er because we are part of the equation, that is the disordered person is triggered into a response and we react in anger or shock, both need to learn.

I strongly believe the way forward is intelligent discussion and think all lines working in the area of stalking,suicide,self-harm,domestic abuse, relationship problems and mental health should have links to  bpdfamily. I list these groups because after 18 plus years of reading stories in various email groups and media coverage, its seems many could be dealing with PD's because of lack of information this does not show.

We all need much more information more funding is needed until this becomes as well known as cancer, in my case it took many years to find my way to BPDcentral &  bpdfamily

I would like to see  all being informed and for the likes of myself more information on people who are in denial or more to the point information that would guide me to a place of safety. Any counselling services I've been to where unable to point me in the right direction and knowledge in the UK on these issues is vary poor, there are some sites beginning to show information on PD's again their knowledge is limited. The best advice I got was "O'boy that's difficult"

I would like to see those caught in domestic abuse who could be dealing with someone with a PD get help which in turn could save many relationships. I am not trying to say PD's cause domestic abuse but do believe it to be a core issue.   WomensAidNI have told me people have choices and choose to be abusive their reckoning was my mother was only abusive with me & had friends as I told them, because she didn't abuse them it was a choice. I tried to tell them her choices were diminished because of her disorder and if they held information on this then people like me and my mother could find  proper help.

Any thoughts

Mitch

Hi Mitchell,

You make an extremely good point, we do need to build awareness. But one of the big issues in the UK is funding. There is very little money for talking therapies as it is, so expensive specialism are avoided.  So for example with PTSD, this breaks down into various different types. But if the treatment is the same for all, why diagnose beyond PTSD ? The Mental Health services in the  UK , have long been referred to as the “Cinderella” service of the NHS. Also as those with mental health don’t beat the drum and go on marches, in the way other groups do. So their voice is diminished. But on a up note, you will find the UK is aware of PD, I saw figures only today stating around 50% of stalkers are believed to have a PD, 25% of those in jail also. Also the Police had offender profiling, way before the PD were discovered. So the knowledge is there.

However, we can make change in our own way, and www.change.org  has a petition to increase funding for mental health and also research into BPD. Just go to the site and Google these terms and add your name.

The other big issues, is that those with a PD are genetically programmed to keep that secret. Part of the diagnosis, is ironically, that they cannot hold any negative labels, they will reject a diagnosis so treatment is rare. The USA tends to be 10 years ahead of the UK, as we wait for medications to become genetic (i.e. much cheaper) and therapies to become proven (in American studies).

That said and done, this website is the biggest of it’s kind, and has many recommendations including an NHS Trust. So by contribution here, you will be helping. But what about your particular scenario ? What sort of help and support do you need right now ?
