Post by: BPDFamily on December 06, 2018, 11:31:50 AM
Parenting a Teen or Adult Child with BPD

Summary: Learn to coach a teen or adult child through intensive outpatient (IOP) or residential treatment (RTC).  Learn relationship, family management, self care skills.

Audience: This board is for the parents and caregivers of children, teens, and adults who suffer from traits of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) or have a highly sensitive personality. BPD doesn’t just impact the person with the disorder, the instable pattern of interacting with others impacts everyone they share relationships with including family, friends, and romantic partners.

Objective: Our objective is to better understand the struggles our child faces and to learn the skills to improve our relationship and provide a supportive environment.

It is also our objective to evaluate and improve on our own emotional responses, attitudes and effectiveness as a role model.

General Approach: The focus here is on problem solving and we follow the basic principles of the Family Connections program developed by the National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder (NEABPD).  We encourage families to make basic changes in how they relate to create an environment for real progress.

For example, it is recommended that:
  • family members need to interpret things in the most benign way possible;
  • there is no one or any absolute truth;
  • everyone in the family is doing the best they can in this moment;
  • everyone needs to try harder.

The tools taught here are derived from reliable clinical resources.
