Title: Returning from therapeutic boarding school
Post by: njtxus on July 02, 2019, 04:51:58 PM
Can anyone share with me feedback on helping their children when they returned from a therapeutic boarding school?   My child is doing so well not showing any signs of the BPD we were seeing at home and I hope she will be there a few more months.

I am glad she is doing so well but want her happy and safe at home too

Any guidance or experience would be appreciated.

Hi NJTXUS,
Welcome! It is great your child is showing marvelous progress in therapeutic boarding school.  Others here can chime in for the only experience I have had was my son was in a therapeutic hospital when he was 15-16.  It was important for me to have my own therapist so I could work on communication, my self care, boundaries, etc. . I am not sure if your child is under 18? If so perhaps you could meet with your child’s therapists to come up with a treatment plan for when she gets out.?

Hi njtxus

Along with Swimmy I welcome you. That is great to hear your daughter (DD) is doing so well at RTC.   While I have no experience of RTC I have read here that some go onto IOP and the RTC work with the family to transition back home and further treatment and how best to support. It is good you are thinking ahead, as Swimmy says perhaps ask the RTC what their process is and what you can do to prepare yourself. Have you taken part in family sessions?

If you look at month 10 here you'll find lbjnltx's experience of her daughter transitioning home Residential Treatment: Journal of 12 Month Journey (https://bpdfamily.com/message_board/index.php?topic=140551)
