Title: my adult daughter refuses to seek treatment for her obvious illness
Post by: stressed mom on November 26, 2019, 09:19:29 AM
my 20 year old daughter has always struggled with mental illness but she semi-functions.  She refuses to seek help even though I've fought long and hard to provide it for her.  She left our home and stays with her boyfriend but is fully dependent on me financially.  She has had addictions, alcohol abuse, risky behavior, arrested for shoplifting and has a grandiose attitude towards everyone.  I've had to lock my doors because of her stealing, taking our medications etc.  How can I convince her to seek help? I'm so exhausted

Hello Stressed Mom
It is good to meet you although I am sad about the circumstances. Having a child with BPD or any serious mental illness is a tough situation to be in. But you have definitely come to the right place to get help, information, and support. There are lots of reasons why people refuse treatment such as fear of the stigma, a belief that nothing is really wrong, denial, and more. What specifically is she doing that leads you to believe she has BPD? Perhaps we can help.
