This looks like a very interesting study.  What motivated you to work in the area of personality disorders and specifically BPD? Is there someone in your family with the disorder? Are you planning to practice in this specialty?

Welcome to the community.

Hi Skip,
Many thanks for your message. I am a psychologist in clinical training working in a health service with individuals with different mental health presentations, including BPD. In the service I work, there is also a programme for family members/ significant others of people with BPD. Through my work, I have observed the important role that family members/ significant others can play in the lives of people with BPD. However, there is currently very little research looking at their experience.

Both my observation of the important role of those supporting people with BPD and the lack of research to understand their needs have sparked my interest in undertaking research in this particular area.

Using the information from this online survey, we are hoping to add to the existing research so that the experience of family members/ significant others are better understood. We hope that the findings of this study can be used by clinicians and organisations developing supports for family members/ significant others caring for people with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Kind regards,
Aoife Hayes

To the community,

Many thanks for your support and participation in this research study. We have received a high number of responses. Minimal research has been undertaken to understand the distress and wellbeing of carers/ supporters of people with Borderline Personality Disorder. We do hope our research will help better understand the experience of family members and carers of people with BPD  and hopefully inform the development and adaptation of supports for family members and significant others, in addition to informing pathways for future research.

The study will remain open until tomorrow, 31st October if anyone else would like to participate.

Again, many thanks to this community and to those administering BPDFamily.com for supporting this research.

Warm wishes,
Aoife Hayes

It's hell.  It takes a toll on our health, both mental and physical.   That's why we're in the "divorce" subforum...   I believe it's similar to NPD abuse, which is well documented by Dr Ramani on youtube.
