Title: Successful medications to help with BPD?
Post by: Jennadog on June 21, 2021, 01:13:53 PM
Hi. I am new here and this is my first post.

I strongly suspect my partner has BPD. For many years I could not put my finger on what was wrong. As I started learning more about BPD, I came to realize this is almost him to a tee!

He is not receptive to thinking he has mental illness or any kind of diagnosable issues but is open to taking medication to help with his depression/suicidal thoughts. He does not want to take an SSRI as he has had a bad experince with them.

Long story short, I am just curious as to which meds your loved one is being treated with and has it helped?

Thanks so much!

My BPDw has used two different meds in our 10 years together, Lexapro and Welbutrin.  She tried others prior to us meeting.  There are undesirable side effects for all of them, which makes it difficult for her to keep on them consistently.  In the past she would stop for a week or two a few times a year.  When off the med, her rages would escalate in frequency and intensity.  She stopped altogether 10 months ago, put me through hell for 6 months and then was arrested for her 2nd domestic violence occurrence.  So I'm a big fan of them, personally.

From what I've read, while there is not a specific med for BPD, anxiety/depression meds help some pwBPD quite a bit, but some get no benefit.  The technical benefit is that the meds lower the overall "baseline emotional state" and reduce stress.
