Summary: In the most troubled relationships, it is not uncommon for a BPD partner to unexpectedly abandon the relationship or do something so hurtful that one cannot continue. Your partner may emotionally discard you or become abusive - leaving you to feel there is no choice but to file for divorce. Audience: Members that are evaluating the emotional health of their marriage and have decided that it is best to dissolve the marriage. Or, those who are in the process of divorce, whether they have initiated the process themselves, or facing a divorce that their spouse filed. Objective: To take an assertive approach -- not an aggressive or appeasing approach -- to minimize the amount of conflict in high-conflict legal actions, divorces, and custody battles, and to find a way to heal from the trauma, and if we have kids, to create peace in our lives and theirs under challenging circumstances. General Approach: Family Court is perfectly suited to the fantasies of someone with a personality disorder: There is an all-powerful person (the judge) who will punish or control the other spouse. The focus of the court process is perceived as fixing blame -- and many with personality disorders are experts at blame.
