Thanks! It is enlightening to know what those mean. Even though a newbie often has very good insight, it's nice to know sometimes how much board experience someone has. Even though this board gets lots of rave reviews about the amount of support and wisdom here, I'd like to add how much I marvel at the civility on this board. Surfing the net, I see so many forums where there are nasty comments or inappropriate or off topic posts. You guys do an outstanding job! Post by: Matt on January 03, 2010, 09:47:02 PM I don't know if there are official definitions - if so maybe somebody will come along and delete this - but I can tell you what they basically mean.
Ambassadors are the most important because they are volunteers who greet new members and help them figure out how to make the best use of this site. Ambassadors focus on making sure each new member gets whatever help is needed to find the right part of this site - the right message board - where they will be among other members in similar situations. Advisors and "Board advisors" are the same thing: the smartest, most charming, best looking - oh wait, you want to know what we do... .Well Advisors float around the site helping wherever we can, especially with members who aren't getting exactly what they need from the other members - like maybe specific information that has been researched by someone on the staff but not all the members know where it is. Or a way of looking at things that could be helpful. We also work with the leaders here to figure out ways to improve the site and the organization. Advisors are all volunteers. Emeritus isn't really a position or job function, it's a recognition of the contributions made by some members who have been around awhile and helped a lot of others. Moderators are responsible for keeping things productive on each message board. They move messages and threads to another spot where they will fit better, and provide guidance to members to help us all stay productive - minimize conflict and maximize focus on the important issues. Part referee, part coach. Also volunteers. JoannaK is the Administrator here - the Grand Poobah who makes the whole thing work. She is a volunteer too. Skip is the site Director who has ultimate financial and legal responsibility and sets policy (with input from other staff members). It makes me happy and gives me hope for the future of humankind that so many people can come together to help and support others, and each other, without thinking of economic or personal gain.

See, this site is like a planet of its own, with its own living species, its own atmosphere, its own language... .which like any living language is constantly changing, evolving... .into different terms, different symbols, different contextual acronyms. Since we are laughing, here is a joke on me: For the longest time I thought that DH meant 'divorced husband" however, the context of the posts did not support this definition. It took an epiphany while grinding black mineral rock salt--to be sprinkled on a cold water melon---that it meant, ":)arling Husband"! Post by: Matt on August 17, 2012, 03:53:00 PM Well the key thing to know is that they're all volunteers - members who came here, got help, and stayed to help others.
Ambassadors greet new members and help them figure out how to use the site - which board will be most helpful, etc. Advisors are usually Ambassadors first. Then they focus on one or two areas where they each have good experience and knowledge, and develop and share information and approaches in that area. They can also do administrative things, like moving a thread to a different board where it will fit better, or locking a thread when it gets too long. Moderators have the big picture - mostly focused on making sure the site functions well and on solving problems that come up between members.
