Hi all,

I am the child of a mother who I suspect suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder. She has always refused to seek medical help in regards to her mental health, so has never received an official diagnosis, but has exhibited symptoms and lined up perfectly with things I have read and researched for over 10 years now.

The behaviors that she has exhibited within our relationship have had a severely negative impact on my mental health, and are to the point that could be considered emotional and verbal abuse. I just moved out of my childhood home, and she continues to be incredibly intrusive and have expectations that are unrealistic. Her views of what an adult child - mother relationship should look like are very unhealthy but every time I have tried to discuss how she makes me feel with her, it ends up blowing up in my face.

If I'm being honest, I could go on and on about my situation and talk about how it's affected me for days on end. But what I'm really here for is simply to seek out support from those who truly understand what I am going through. I hope I can find it here.

hi mistreatedmisfit,
Welcome and I think you will find a lot of support here, we get it.

A couple questions, do you have siblings?

It is good you realized you need to take care of your own emotional well-being, that takes courage and shows a lot of strength.  It is OK to ask for help, afterall, how can we solve a problem we really know nothing about?

What is your next step now that discussing it with her doesn't seem to be working?  What kind of boundary do you feel might be appropriate now that you've exhausted the "working it out in a reasonable fashion by talking about my feelings' didn't seem to help.
