When I try to use the search function a message tells me that I'm not permitted to do so and the same thing happens when I try to view members profiles.

Bing Search Bar

Good for overall sight search.  Bing searches the editorial, workshops, book reviews, and member threads.

The Bing toolbar is toward the top of the main page and directly under the main header.  Type the term or phrase you wish to search and click on "Search bpdfamily".

This will open a page that lists the search results.

Search Members Function

When you select Search Members from the main menu (on the dark green bar above) you will see two tabs:  View all Members and Search Members.

The page defaults to selecting Search by Name. Type the name in and hit enter.

Once you have searched for a member, another page will open and you will see members listed by user name.  Sometimes a search shows several members depending on how many members have a similar name.

Select the name you want and click on it.  That will bring you to the Members Profile Page where you will see three options:

- Send this member a personal message.
- Show the last posts of this person.
- Show general statistics for this member.

Clicking on View all Members will generate a list of all members in alphabetical order.

Search Threads Function

Please keep in mind that we have a large and growing database of topics and messages on our boards.  Therefore if your search request is too general and/or searches the entire database, it can overwhelm our server and briefly block other members and guests from accessing our site.  That is what is occurring when you encounter SMF database connection errors.

For that reason, please keep your search requests as specific as possible and limit the scope of the search to just the areas where you expect to find the results.

When you select Search from the main menu (on the dark green bar above) you will be presented with a variety of options.  Please narrow your search as much as possible using these options:

  • Search for
    Enter your search words
  • Match all words
Selecting the other choice, "Any words", is not recommended since it can greatly enlarge the results
  • By user
Enter the member names here if possible, separate names with commas
  • Options: Show results as messages
Selecting this returns the entire messages rather than just excerpts from the messages
  • Options: Search in topic subjects only
Selecting this speeds searches, as you then search only the topic subject lines and ignore the text in the messages
  • Message Age
Enter the approximate number of days to search, for example, if it was within the last 3 weeks, enter 0 and 21
  • Search order
While it defaults to most recent results first, you can select other orders such as most relevant first or oldest first
  • Choose 1-3 boards to search in
Please do not Check all, for searches covering periods of more than 7 days.

Paragraph header (click to insert in post)
We have a technical issue. The search function on a messageboard with a large database is a significant power drain. When too many people use it, it slows down the board for everyone.

For this reason, we try to balance access and speed by limiting search to members with the most posts to search. The "minimum post requirement" is always below 10.

We ask members to narrow their searches using the advanced search option.
