I wonder if any of you have gone to court to seek treatment for their child?  How did it go?  I just replied to Hoping2Cope and I yammered on a bit.  It got me wondering if any of you all have tried this resource.  As I said we cannot pay $7500/month for this girl's treatment:

Re: 15-year-old probably has BPD

"Hi.  I did an intro a couple of weeks ago.  My daughter is just turning 16 and is in the 10th grade.  Your family and mine are dealing with the same problems.  Running away, drugs, sex for drugs, 30+ partners, violence at home, theft, rage, false police reports, food gorging... .nothing is ever her fault... .My daughter has eight of the nine BPD symptoms.  She has been hospitalized four times since last June.  Three times since January.  She just got out of a second hospital; discharge papers recommend residential treatment.  The first hospital; where she had three 15 day vacations says she cannot return.  Her issues exceed their scope.

She made it five days in our home this last time.  With therapy, psychiatrist and GYN appointments she had only one full day back at school.  That night I found a pack of razors in her room and she had more than 36 slashes and a pentagram carved on her hand.  Said she was gonna kill herself again so we took her to the ER and she was placed in the latest hospital.  She was charming and happy in the hospital and did arts and crafts for a week.  For whatever reason we found she was given unlimited access to a phone so she might have messed up some police investigations.  They discharged her without warning today.

I have filed a CHINS petition with my county's juvenile court.  That's Child In Need Of Supervision.  The hearing is next week.  If the judge finds she needs help a panel of professionals meets twice a month.  They can decide to hospitalize her (on the county's dime) put her in therapeutic foster care, proscribe "intensive in home therapy" which is a counselor coming to our home 10 hours a week to supervise how she functions and I suppose how we interact.  My family has nothing to hide and everything to be proud of on how we manage this girl.  After seeing many therapists since she was eight we are seeing a county mental health therapist because she is very fluent with the process we need to go through to buffet the CHINS.  She is excellent and the daughter likes her so far.

I also had an IEP meeting with the school.  I have managed her well at home but she was leaving campus to conduct her  prostitution business.  Sex for drugs.  With students and adult males.  A police detective has her computer and is reeling in a grown man she was sexting.  Anyway the school will walk her from class to class starting tomorrow and they are getting her enrolled in the local school for EMO kids.  The goal of the school is to bring her back up to grade level.  She has devolved to just trying to get a general high school diploma.  I understand that if the county school system can't accommodate her they might pay for residential treatment.

The probation or intake officer we saw about filing the CHINS says we can give up custody to the state.  We would probably pay child support.  I found an on line tool for my state and I think child support would be $1000 a month.  We are spending more than that in copays and lost work right now.  We cannot afford the $7500+ per month residential treatment seems to cost.  The sites for most of these places are coy about what they really charge.  She was adopted as an infant and tells me everyday how much she hates me and how she wants to live elsewhere.  We are a family that saved for her college and she would be getting her own car if she were functioning normally.  I am very concerned for my own safety as well as her two brothers.  I'm afraid she will falsely accuse one of us of abuse.  She has assaulted the younger boy many times in the past.  I finally had her arrested last June.  Cue first hospital visit.

Anyway, my point to you besides commiseration is to get an IEP with the school and do a CHINS or whatever your state calls it for the drug use and running away.  They do not want to put her in jail.  The courts can force her in to treatment and they pay for it.  We only have two years left to "force" her to get help to become a functional adult. Hello again beachglass,

Good to see you back!

I looked into filing a CHINS for my d when she was 12 and decided against it so I don't have any experience going that route.  I have a friend that works for CPS and asked her how I could get RTC paid for (at the time insurance would only cover 2 weeks inpatient) and she was honest and told me I would have to give up my parental rights and depend on the state to take proper care of my daughter.  I decided against that too.  I kept exploring other options.

Because my d was doing ok at school I couldn't explore the IEP route.  I think this is a viable option for you though.  IEP's are federally funded and implemented under each State's educational system.  The school system must provide an educational experience that your child succeeds at and must keep her and the other students safe during that school experience.

What was the outcome of the IEP meeting?

Also, if the doctors at the hospital are recommending RTC then take advantage of that and explore your insurance options.  If a doctor is stating that it is medically necessary for your daughter to be inpatient long term your insurance company is to provide that care.  Have you talked with the insurance company?

When my d was in RTC most of the other girls there were there on IEP full or partial funding.  I have seen IEP pay for the school portion and insurance pay for the therapy portion of RTC.

You mention you have college savings for her.  I believe that you can use that savings to pay for RTC as well without tax penalty, check into this.  There are  low interest loan companies that specifically fund RTC's.

As for my family... .I was able to convince my husband to spend all of our savings on RTC for  my daughter... .we were self pay at 7500 a month... .as you say.  It was one of many good choices and the main reason my daughter, now 18 is clinically considered recovered from BPD.

I want to encourage you not to give up your parental rights to get your daughter the care she needs until all other options have been completely exhausted.  She is your child and no one is going to represent her like you will or care about her like you do.

^^The "anybody else" sounds rude and dismissive but I typed a LONG reply and this site ate it when I hit the post key.

All her teachers were at the IEP meeting three days ago.  They know now not to let her leave class w/o calling the resource officer to escort her.  They are (finally) concerned at the idea she can bring drugs back in to the school.  At today's meeting with her counselor (she was returning to school after the last week in the hospital) the school will escort her between classes and she will be sent to the EMO high school every other day to try to get caught up.

Meanwhile we have the CHINS hearing next week and I hope the court places her.  She is under their jurisdiction already due to criminal acts.

Uhh! I hate it when that happens.  If it should happen again hit the <-- arrow and your post should come back up.

It's good to hear that the school is taking extra steps to insure her safety.  What other accommodations does she have under her IEP and what is the disability she was granted the IEP under?  Anything specific?

What is an EMO high school?

Also I am wondering about the benefits maxing out... .with children in need of medical care I didn't think Insurance could deny that care under the new insurance laws.  If I'm wrong... .and I hope I'm not... .in my state there used to be a petition to declare your child medically dependent.  It is (was) in place for families whose medical coverage was maxed out for a child needing longterm medical attention.
