Cat helps BPD spouse

An update on my situation. Maybe it could help others reading.

My wife with BPD recently adopted a cat and it's become an emotional support for her. She grew up with cats but hasn't had one lately so I think she became lonely without one. When she plays with it, she says it helps with her emotions. In case of emotional dysregulation and we need some separate time, it seems to be more effective and faster than previously. It's kind of like the cat became her caretaker.

We're spending separate time and doing more of our own activities that we like instead of enmeshing as one to do most everything. It's really helped me too to "feel like me". This website has been a wonderful resource and I'm very thankful.

Jabiru what an interesting update, thanks for sharing. I wonder if there's any research out there about emotional support animals for bpd? My BPD MIL is very, very attached to her dog, I feel like there's something there.

This is great to hear.  I am happy spending time with a cat helps your wife to self-sooth/regulate.

It’s good to be able to spend time apart. Hobbies are like self-care, eh? I am glad you are feeling more like yourself.
