Hi, my 17 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with BPD. We have suspected it for some time now and are relieved that a name can be put to it which describes most of her behaviour. I am interested in how to parent for someone like her who gets triggered so easily. thanks Garry

Hi GarryR

I would like to welcome you to our online community  BPD can be quite a challenging disorder but now that your daughter is diagnosed, you at least know what you're dealing with. When it comes to dealing with BPD, knowledge truly is power. Since when have you suspected there was something going on with your daughter? And what led up to her being diagnosed?

You say your daughter gets triggered easily, are there any triggers in particular that you can identify? What would you say are her most problematic or concerning behaviors?

You are interested in in learning how to parent a child with BPD. I think the resources on this website can be very helpful. Considering your daughter is easily triggered, you might benefit from taking a look at several of the communication techniques described on this website:

Validation

Ending the Cycle of Conflict

I also suggest you take a look at the tools and lessons to the right of this message board. They can be very insightful and helpful as you try to learn new ways of dealing with your daughter.
