Hi,

My 16 year old daughter is displaying emerging BPD traits and has been in a psychiatric hospital for 9 months due to self-harm.

The hospital does not do DBT yet I feel this is the correct treatment for my daughter.

We are looking for a residential DBT program anywhere in the world.

Mcleans is turning us down as they have had problems accepting international patients.

Anywhere in the US/UK/Australia would be good. (Anywhere they speak English.)

Thanks,

Lisa

Hello lisa1972 and  Welcome

I'm sorry you have found yourself having to check out treatment options. I don't personally know of any that would fit but suggest you read this thread Residential Treatment Program (RTP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)? which provides ideas from other members.

You can also benefit from posting and reading on the Parenting a son or daughter suffering from BPD board. You will find other members on this discussion board who were in a similar place to you, with a child displaying BPD traits. These members can offer you ideas and support as you move along on this journey.

What are the traits you are finding hardest to deal with? Do you have other children or family in the house? How are you doing through of all of this.

We're glad you've found us and hope we can provide you some help as you support your daughter.

My daughter is currently in a DBT-based program in Rockport Maine.  The whole facility is not DBT necessarily, but my daughter's program is DBT based.  Staff use it with her daily, they have DBT group and it is used in individual therapy. It is a 6-bed, female only house.

Clearview Treatment Program in the Los Angeles area may be a possibility, though they may only take adults.  If you do go in that direction be VERY aware that they may discharge your daughter earlier than she should be.  You would really need to be on top and insist for longer treatment.   I have heard good things about New Haven Residential Treatment Center in Utah - I'm not sure if they do DBT, but I know two girls that had BPD go there and had good results.  I absolutely agree that DBT is the way to go.   McLean's program is stellar (my daughter went there), I'm sorry that they will not accept your daughter, I wonder if there is any way around their refusal (big donation?).   Best of luck to you, it's not easy. . .

Lisa, there is also the Meehl House in Texas, though, to be honest with you, I have not heard of anyone going through the program.  I only know that it is geared towards people with BPD and the program is mainly DBT focussed.  Once again, it may only be for adults, but it's worth looking into.  Perhaps you could call all the programs I mentioned and see if they have recommendations . . . though I am sincerely partial to McLeans excellent program  . . .perhaps you could really have a heart to heart discussion with them and see if they might feel differently about your daughter attending?  Mention that you would contribute heavily to their fund for girls that cannot afford the program (I forget what it's called)?   When a girl goes through the program at 3 East, they are given a list of residential treatment centers that McLean recommends, you could ask for some of their recommendations (New Haven was one which they recommended).  I wish you the best of luck!

Can you give us an update? Did you get into Mcleans?  How was it?
