While exploring a remote canyon in Utah, mountaineer and adventurer Aron Ralston becomes trapped when a boulder falls on his arm. Over the next five days, Ralston examines his life and considers his options, leading him to an agonizing choice: to amputate his arm so that he can extricate himself and try to make his way back to civilization or remain pinned to the canyon wall and likely die.

Aron Ralston's book, "Between a Rock and a Hard Place."

I know it's not that bad but I think of this story from time to time and think this man had to make a difficult choice to be able to live his life instead of dying in a hole

The analogy fits, somewhat.

It "figuratively" fits for you, but just realize that in your case you do actually have other options to try before cutting off your arm (wife in analogy).

Nobody will judge you harshly (here anyway) for going ahead and cutting off your arm (ending r/s).

My recommendation is to keep your pocket knife in your pocket, FOCUS ON SELF CARE, for the next few days and then let's come up with a new plan just before she gets home.

How long do we have until she gets home?  Until then, please focus on pleasant stuff,
