Hi Mahita,

I'm sorry you're on the receiving end of a silent treatment. They really are very painful.

My therapist explained to me that when someone feels erased (like your BF), he or she seeks to make others feel that way, too, and the silent treatment is way to show you how it feels

Someone who suffers from BPD tends to feel this way on a good day, and often we step into a situation that makes them blame us for that feeling.

The silent treatment can sometimes be an opportunity for them to regulate what are often intense emotions, to help themselves back to baseline, which takes longer for someone with BPD. As challenging as it may be, it is a good opportunity for you to use this time to take care of yourself, too. He will likely come around when he is ready, and may behave as though nothing happened. It's a sign that his emotions are not as aroused and he can think and act more clearly. Some people with BPD, if they are intensely emotionally dysregulated, may not remember exactly what happened, while others may feel shame and don't want to discuss a topic associated with self-loathing for themselves.

When you two are in a silent treatment, how does it usually end?
