She's a therapist, a recovering alcoholic, and now a grandmother to my children. They're getting older and it's really hard to be around her and them at the same time. She's saying alot of really inappropriate things---and asking me what I call therapy questions. She doesn't see a therapist anymore and she says she takes barely any medicine. She's almost 70 and with her moods I am also afraid she's going to get so worked up she'll have a heart attack. She held her chest today when she was fighting/arguing  with my step father.  I just want to talkand listen I suppose. Are there any support groups near Philadelphia? My husband really doesn't know what to say---he just st rolls his eyes---but she's my mom, I worry.

What kind of inappropriate questions does she ask? Are they of your children?

You may find resources for a local group here: www.nami.org

What kind of things does she get worked up about?

Hi, kdesigner.

Thanks for posting. My parents are in their 70s; my mother is the one with BPD. They both make a lot of choices that are not great for their health. That's not something I can change or control, even if I'd prefer they wanted to be healthier and happier. How often are you around your mother? How are you looking after yourself and coping with her behaviors?

Turkish has some good questions, too. We hope to hear more from you when you're ready.

Wishing you peace,

PF

Hi Kdesigner

I would like to welcome you to our online community  I think your worries are understandable, in spite of everything, she's still your mother and you also have your children to consider now.

You mention your mother saying a lot of inappropriate things, does she also say inappropriate things to your children? How does she generally treat your children?

You also mention that she doesn't see a therapist anymore, but do you feel like she has shown any true insights into her own behavior? Do you feel like she has ever acknowledged that some aspects of her behavior might be inappropriate?

It is unfortunate that she does not see a therapist anymore and barely takes her medicine. Were the therapy and medication for BPD or perhaps (also) some other disorder?

Take care and I hope to read more of your story later
