Hi everyone,

i am new here and from the UK. I have a 14 year old daughter recently diagnosed with emerging traits of BPD. I have been searching the internet for some kind of local support but struggled to find anything, i just wondered if there are any other parents on her with children in the Uk? If so, have you managed to find any support groups yourselves?

Thanks x

I am in the UK and have noticed a few others from here posting. I haven't found any local support for parents but this board has been brilliant and I wish I had used it earlier.

DBT services forr adolescents in the UK are developing quickly and are available through some CAMHS services. Google Dr michaela Swales at Bangor University, North Wales. She trained with Marsha Linehan and her publications might reveal if there are any DBT services near you.

Also reading Valerie Porr's book may help you. In some CAMHS services there is still a strong tendency to look for blame in the parent (depending which therapist you are allocated) and this book is a bit of an antidote.

This site has lots of information and support and I find it more helpful than anything I have seen locally...

Hi, thanks for your response. yes my girl is with CAMHS - we have a psychologist who is very supportive and accepting of the fact that the parents are not always to blame for BPD. although he has now diagnosed her with 'Maladaptive behaviour suggestive of emerging personality disorder, emotionally unstable type' (phew!), he has said the DBT won't be availabe until she is 18 and we are to continue waiting for an appointment for CBT (been waiting for more than a year now!). I will have a look at your sugestion that DBT may now be avaialble for adolecents in the UK - it would be great if we could get her set up with support at this age and try to learn to manage her symptoms as early as possible.

Hi - I am in the UK too. There seems to be very little in the way of support groups for parents (even general ones for parents of young people with mental health problems, much less specific for BPD).

There did used to be a support group for family members of BPD but since my emails keep getting bounced back I am assuming it's been closed due to cuts.

My DD16 is under CAMHS, she's having therapy, she may now be referred for DBT style sessions (there is a full DBT group but they are worried that since she is currently not as ill as other people in the group it will be more harmful than helpful).  Not sure how I feel about that assessment.

The psychiatrist was useless so I'm currently waiting for another P to be assigned.

None of this is particularly helpful, sorry. Just wanted to say hi.
