I had to laugh. Like you even though I could explain where most of the money went there was still a void.

Seriously.  At the end of 2014, I was still about $3K short of maxing my Roth for the year.  She demanded I pay a little each month, rather than wait until the end of the year.

April of 2015, after a few months of $500/month coming out, she asks me to stop the investments for a few months.

I can't win.

You can't reason with the Voice of Unreason...

I'm not advocating this, your circumstances or your laws could be different, but I stopped contributions to my retirement account during the divorce.  I reasoned (1) I needed the money now to pay for legal expenses and (2) anything I contributed might have to be split when we got to the financial part of the case.  (I never did get an answer whether the financial split would be based on assets at the beginning of the divorce or assets at the end of the two year divorce.)  I figured putting it 100% toward my current expenses would be better than risking 50% in my retirement account.

What I didn't expect was that my divorce took nearly 2 years.  My lawyer had initially estimated it would be 7-9 months.
