My daughter is in crisis. We have been going to therapists on & off for many years trying to find someone who understands and can help her. We recently found someone who we think gets it and  has diagnosed her with chronic depression, BPD, ptsd & substance abuse.

She & her boyfriend went away for a couple of days. He texted me 911 and then she texted me that she is so so sad. I called her, she is curled up crying and cant stop. He left the room after this efforts to comfort her didnt work. I texted him to go back and be there so she feels safe and just be near by.

Does anyone have suggestions for what i can say to her to help her through?

I was deeply depressed a few years ago and had a night where the pain of depression was so bad I  couldn't stop crying. My daughter tried her best to help me, but she couldn't. She insisted I go to Crisis to be evaluated. It was the best option and very helpful.

Hello mybabygirl,

We are glad you are here looking for help for your daughter.  I'm sorry she is in such intense pain right now.  Did something specific happen that set this episode in motion?  Is she on any meds to address the depression?

One basic need that your daughter has, and we all have, is to feel like someone hears and understands us.  This can be accomplished with heartfelt validation.  Here is some info to help you understand how to practice this skill with your daughter and others in your life:

How old is your daughter?

We are here to help.

I hope your daughter is feeling better today. For future  reference, NAMI has some good information on how to help a depressed person in addition to the materials on this site.
