I came across this sonnet and it struck me.

SONNET 137

Thou blind fool, Love, what dost thou to mine eyes,

That they behold, and see not what they see?

They know what beauty is, see where it lies,

Yet what the best is take the worst to be.

If eyes corrupt by over-partial looks

Be anchor'd in the bay where all men ride,

Why of eyes' falsehood hast thou forged hooks,

Whereto the judgment of my heart is tied?

Why should my heart think that a several plot

Which my heart knows the wide world's common place?

Or mine eyes seeing this, say this is not,

To put fair truth upon so foul a face?

In things right true my heart and eyes have erred,

And to this false plague are they now transferr'd.

Yes!  That really resonates for me, particularly the first two lines.  Thanks for this.

Very interesting, Enlighten me  Smiling (click to insert in post)

Apparently there is a sizable body of opinion that Henry VIII himself was a borderline, so Shakespeare coming across one is not that much of a surprise! Broken minds, like broken legs, have probably been around since the dawn of civilisation - it's only recently that we've been looking for explanations of individuals' behaviour rather than simplistically classifying them as 'mad'.

I heard the first two lines in a film yesterday and looked it up. The explanation of its meaning is quiet eye opening.

The line "Be anchored in the bay where all men ride. Is a reference to the woman in questions promiscuity.

Its sad as it rings true. I was blinded to who she really was and ignored the red flags and only saw what I wanted to see.
