Before you can make things better, you have to stop making them worse... Have you considered that being critical, judgmental, or invalidating toward the other parent, no matter what she or he just did will only make matters worse? Someone has to be do something. This means finding the motivation to stop making things worse, learning how to interrupt your own negative responses, body language, facial expressions, voice tone, and learning how to inhibit your urges to do things that you later realize are contributing to the tensions.

Please share any thoughts or opinions on eeg test results. My BPD ex told me ( and I believe) that her eeg test was "on fire" , similar to a "9/11 survivor" . I concerned her health care provider.  How can this additional information effect treatment of BPD? Thanks

EEG procedures are for measuring seizures.

Unless you can get neurological damage from 9/11, she's lying.

I appreciate your response/ however eeg is widely accepted in diagnosing brain abnormalities.

She needs to see a neurologist.

I agree. She is at a top personality disorder clinic in Manhattan - reportedly one of the best in the country and they are perplexed by the severity of her condition.

Stop right there. Don't "just believe" what sounds like a rather histrionic (and clinically meaningless) claim. If you truly are interested and want to engage, ask to see the test results.

Apparently EEG is a useful tool for dual diagnosis.

www.dualdiagnosis.org/testing-assessments-comorbidity/electroencephalography/

However, her explanation of the results of the test does sound a bit histrionic, drama making rather than a clinical expression of the findings.

[Typically when I explain the results of my MRI to folks my answer is more clinical:  I have a moderate severity of spinal stenosis, bulged disc from c6-c8 which is the reason for my numbness in my hands and neck pain.  I do not require surgery because my nerve conduction results show that it is not impairing my ability to walk or such, short of another accident that may move this, I expect it to remain the same.  There are things I can to to have a positive or negative affect... . Etc. ok, I really really condense this to bulge causes xyz.

Not: They said the bulge is like someone who is in so much daily pain that they would never want to get off the sofa if they had the same, that it is amazing I even do the dishes.]

She likely is seeking validation that what she is experiencing is real, and wants to feel it is not simply a fabrication or of her own doing but of some biological/neurological doing to her.

She may want to posture as a victim, with her results.

She may want sympathy or other emotional "needs."

It is likely that they may have used an example of a 911 survivors brain EEG as an example to her and she drew parallels and felt "normalized" by this and is trying to feel "normal."

I am making all of this up of course.  I do not know what she is thinking.

In any event... .

What are your hopes and expectations of this treatment?

Will you have opportunity to meet with any members of her medical team to discuss any of this with directly?

I saw the results. I am not a doctor but I can read that the eeg was over 2 standard deviations from the norm. She also shared mmpi results which were elevated, especially 73 in pd. It is clear that she is sick. She needs help but I can't be the one to help.
