My teen was recently diagnosed.  It has been a rough summer.  We have just started Dialectical therapy.  I feel overwhelmed by everything i read.  I am so concerned that my teen won't make the effort to help themselves.  Any advice on how to encourage them to do the work?

Hello velma

I would like to welcome you here, you have come to the right place for help and support.

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling overwhelmed right now by everything that you are reading, I can relate to that too, it is such a lot to try to take in. I am sure you will begin to feel less overwhelmed as time goes on.

The best advice when wanting to help our loved ones is to help ourselves first so that we are in the best possible place both mentally and physically to be able to help. So self care is always of the utmost importance. May I ask what self care looks like for you?

Encourage your teen by offering your support and showing your love, praise the efforts being made and just generally ‘be there’ for your child.

I look forward to hearing more from you x

Hi Velma.  I join Feeling Better in welcoming you here.

I echo everything Feeling Better has written in her response to you.  Indeed, so much information is overwhelming, but then that is much the case whenever we attempt to tackle something new.

I, too, look forward to hearing more from you.
