This doctor giving a TedTalk / TedMed talk is amazing.  I love that there is at least SOME research being done on the long-term affects of childhood trauma.  As an adult child with 2 parents and a sibling all with a variety of mental illnesses, and an alcoholic step-father, AND as someone who has had to live with significant health concerns since a young age (and worsening the older I get)... .this makes SO much sense to me.  In a sense, to watch this short video has acted like a moment of validation for me... .it's understandable that I am having these health responses to the trauma I was exposed to as a child.  Not sure if there is something that can be done about it moving forward for families... .my parents and sister did not ask to be sick -- nor does anyone dealing with these illnesses -- and were not in control of the abuse and neglect.  Perhaps if there were treatments for kids RIGHT AWAY each time they experience trauma?  How could this be done on a daily basis, however?  Not sure, but interesting as a point of thought exploration and discussion.

It does feel good to be validated, right? The effects of trauma are real, and they may be seen and felt all around us if we pay attention.

As bad as the abuse and its effects are, there’s still a lot we can do to heal.

Hi DaughterofHera.  It is good to see you again.  I really liked that TEd Talk by Nadine Burke, MD and the ACEs test.  We have had a couple threads here on this so it is good to see it pop up again. 

I was reading that kids who are treated for whatever trauma they are exposed to are much less likely to have some of the long-standing effects from the abuse.  The key is educating the masses and getting through to those who are generationally dysfunctional and who do not recognize certain behaviors as abusive.  With parents who are aware, building resilience in the kid is vital.

Harri ... . Thanks so much for this link.  I had not seen it before and I am finding the information fascinating and helpful to me.     I see that my ACE score is 7, which looks high, and only 2 in the Resilience test... .a few more clicks and I am reading up on what this potentially means for me (still reading).  Thank you.
