Just a quick introduction to myself.
My wife and I took a teenager into our care 15 months ago as she was getting kicked out of the group home she lived in (where my wife volunteers) and had nowhere else to go. We were aware of a range of issues, including those that led to her getting kicked out, but it wasn't until she had been in our care for about 1.5 months that I realized she fit the description of BPD. I did some research and everything fit her to a T. Several psychologists and psychiatrists have informally confirmed my suspicions, although only one of them has been able to work with her directly.
Unfortunately we live in an area where psychiatric resources are absent or poor. My wife and I both have some background in the area, so most of the work we've done with her has been on our own, from reading that we've done and intuition and some materials a psychiatrist friend provided.
In approximately 13 months, our daughter has shown incredible improvement. She's held a good job for eight months and virtually never misses work. She has not expressed serious suicidal ideation in about ten months. We've gone from observing 3-5 major incidents of emotional disregulation a week to only about one a month. She has shown incredible improvements in honesty and self-regulation. And there seem to be meaningful strides in her ability to explore "the grays" and not see everyone in her life quite so black and white anymore. The amount of knowledge online and in print that has been shared by the BPD community has been a tremendous blessing that has contributed to all of this, and I want to thank you much for that.
Of course, if everything were perfect, it's unlikely I'd be starting an account here, right?
