I am in need of gaining skills and boundaries. My daughter was diagnosed with BPD while in juvenile detention about two years ago. Reading through the material for the billionth time, I am wondering if she doesn't have NPD as well because she has seven of the diagnostic criteria listed. I guess I need people to bounce questions off of as well.

Hi contortionist,

Welcome and hello  Smiling (click to insert in post)

How old is your daughter? Is she living with you, and does she accept her diagnosis?

What is some of the material you're reading that concerns you she's NPD/BPD?

Glad you found the site, and I'm sorry for the sadness that brings you here.

My daughter is 19. She is transient/homeless. I don't allow her to stay with me unless it is winter and there is absolutely no other place but the streets because of her behavior negatively affecting her younger brother and sister. She was diagnosed with BPD a while back and she does agree with the diagnosis. She actually uses it as a justification or excuse to behave badly, avoiding responsibility. Along with the various BPD symptoms and behaviors, she has the following from the diagnostic criteria of NPD:

An exaggerated sense of one’s own abilities and achievements - usually revolving around her ideation of singing and playing musical instruments and make-up, nail, and hair artist/stylist. She has messed up plenty of girls haircut along the way.

A constant need for attention, affirmation, and praise

Exploiting other people for personal gain

A sense of entitlement and expectation of special treatment

Feeling envious of others, or believing that others are envious of you

A lack of empathy for others

A belief that you are unique or “special,” but she will associate with anyone for a short amount of time if they have something she is after. She prefers criminals, transients, and street people in general.
