My 24-year-old daughter was diagnosed with BPD several years ago along with ADHD, OCD, PTSD and bipolar II depression. She has willingly participated in two residential programs as well as PHPs and IOPs. She as well as my husband and I have participated in DBT training. She has also done TMS and ketamine treatments and has tried every medication under the sun.
She has been hospitalized several times and despises that process as it always seems sterile, unsupportive and demeaning.
Recently she has begun believing that nothing works and her case is hopeless. She talks about “not wanting to be here”
frequently, but we are so reluctant to hospitalize her again as it will definitely be against her will this time and will undoubtedly be traumatic.
Unlike previously, she is unwilling to participate in any therapy/ treatment as she has seen no real results from her previous work….we are at a loss… afraid to contact professionals and alert the suicide brigade/forced hospitalization but deeply concerned about her fragile condition.
We are at a loss….any suggestions?

Hello fellow parent,

My daughter is in the same boat and horrible state of pain and anger, she is also always saying she doesn't want to be here..  I am also feeling like there is no solution where intervention is more harmful and tramatic than good...  I wish there was a program that is more designed for loving young adults that are in pain..

I am literally lost and calling around again today to see how or who is a good fit.  it would be great to have that gentle program that is willing to just start out by being there for support to gain their trust.  Instead they start with the tough requirements that make it impossible..

Sorry, I wish I had answers but just know your not alone... I wish we had an easy way these awesome kids could know they are not alone.

I wish the very best for your daugther.

-Mom still searching for true help and support for my daughter

Hi Arbek
It is really worrying situation for you. You mention that your dd has multiple diagnoses and tried many different medications. I imagine she is feeling that nothing will work for her and therefore what is the point of trying anything.

I wonder if you are connected to a psychiatrist that you trust and have history with?

It's just that a couple of my friends with various mental health issues who have been on medications etc have been having ECT therapy - with seemingly positive results.

I'll just tell you the story of my friend who has battled all her life with Bipolar. It ran in her family and there were three instances of suicide in her family.

Anyway a few years ago now, she had been hospitalised for quite some time then discharged to sort of social group housing. For I think over two years she rang me every day, more than once a day saying she wanted to die.

I was so sad because I thought that this was how she was going to live her life, just wanting to die, hospitalised, released and repeat.

Then she told me she was going to have ECT. I was pretty reluctant about it because I had an understanding of how it was in the early days. It's nothing like that now.

Anyway, she had a few treatments, perhaps six and bingo! For the past three or four years she has been enjoying life, settled, goes to lots of groups etc.

This long story is just to ask whether you have a trusted psychiatrist that you could talk this over with. It is not something that I have seen mentioned here, but I now know two people whose lives have been turned around by ECT.

It might/might not be suitable for your dd, but from what you have said, you have really tried just about everything else.

Have my fingers crossed for you!
