We take our DD13 to a great child psychiatrist in a building run by our insurance company where there are also lots of therapists with good reputations.  The psych facility is in a building run by our insurance company.  This is a large provider in FL.  We see the doctor this week and I will discuss it with her, but now that we have this diagnosis I am concerned that we have someone who is experienced in dealing with BPD.  She seems to like her current therapist who has experience in self harm and eating disorders, which DD just briefly went inpatient for 2 weeks ago.  I have also asked her if she would work on relationship nurturing which DD desperately needs and she said absolutely. However I am concerned because yesterday her therapist told me privately that she is not sure how to deal with her problem, what to do next. I looked online last night for therapists experience in BPD within a 30 mile radius and got NONE who take our insurance!  Since she was originally our foster child we kept Medicaid as a third party plan so I thought of putting her strictly on that, but none of them accepted that either!  Do your therapists have experience with BPD?  If not, is therapy still progressing at least fairly well?

My dd15 was with a therapist on and off for a year and a half... .  it was talk therapy and it really got us no where... .  in December we looked for a therapist that did Dialectical Behavior Therapy... .  something I am told is needed for teens with BPD... .  she not only liked ehr therapist but like the group therapy she attends as well... .  surprising this new therapist was covered under our insurance... .  every other therapist we have seen has been out of network and we had to paid the therapist directly then get a protion back from insurance company.

Most P and T's don't take insurance... .  they don't want the hassle... .  have you looked for DBT? Can you recommend to your therapist to look into it and educate her or himself?

Now saying all that my dd is in the hospital right now but probably starting DBT helped keep her home a bit longer. I do think it helped her... .  she was off the rails last year and raging every day... .  exhausting... .  but although she improved she still has this underlining problem and has resisted really working on it because she blames everyone but herself... .  until they come to the point where they want help I feel they will continue to struggle... .

Dear bioadopt.  Our d had been in a rtc for a year all run by bdt when she got out she went to t that taught dbt. The problem is she does not apiply the skills because she thinks she does not have a problem .  I have heard of it helping some kids but they have to be comitted 100 percent.  Sometimes t will take a reduction in thier fees it wont hurt to ask.  Its hard to find a good therapist that deals with BPD it is so hard to understand and the t has to be very knowlegable about disease. If you do find one there is a place on this board to ask the t very specific questions like how many patients have you had with BPD, what is your thoughts on BPD, and also our children have the terrible nack of making up storys about us (parents) So make sure you have a open and very frank discussion on ther past and present .  Good Luck and keep looking keeping you in my prayers

Hi Bioadoptmom,

I am struggling with this now with SS10. He does not have a dx of BPD but he does have many traits. He's had same therapist for 6 years and she seems to think his behavior is more drama... .  It's hard as he trusts her. She, unlike your therapist is not admitting she is in over her head... .  I would ask your D'sT for a referral.

Have you seen this:

Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder [New]

See my post here as to what my Pdoc said about long term talk therapy without focus. My SS10 is becoming psychotic... .

Ok, I hope you get some new answers soon and can get the right treatment or treatment that won't make things worse... .
