Before you can make things better, you have to stop making them worse... Have you considered that being critical, judgmental, or invalidating toward the other parent, no matter what she or he just did will only make matters worse? Someone has to be do something. This means finding the motivation to stop making things worse, learning how to interrupt your own negative responses, body language, facial expressions, voice tone, and learning how to inhibit your urges to do things that you later realize are contributing to the tensions.

Especially after latest news hype with gun control and mental health reporting, has anyone had to calm someone, who has suicidal and/or rare homicidal thoughts (both never acted on), fear of therapy due to the following? If so, do you have any suggestions?

1) Break of confidentiality: Authorities being contacted and/or being admitted

2) Recordings/notes coming back to bite later (i.e. in court)

3) Notes becoming available to insurance companies

4) Therapy not being effective due to omission of some details for protection

My thoughts are to point out to him that he could start with speaking about the suicidal thoughts, this should be "safe". As a first important step.

In my experience working with a T is always different from what I assumed it would be in the beginning.
