So I've been reading thru all of our posts over the last several weeks, and I am SO grateful to have a forum to share our thoughts, fears and concerns. I have no idea if there's any correlation of one to the other for what I'm about to share, but I am completely open to your ideas on this sensitive subject. My 17yo daughter is undiagnosed BPD. Her therapist believes she has BPD but her psych will not label yet. She exhibits traits for certain, in addition to being diagnosed with MDD and panic disorder. For most of her life, she has claimed some 6th sense powers. She used to have night terrors and would sleep with me most nights when she was young. When she was a little older (6 or 7), she would tell me she saw ghosts. She started going to a school that had a history of slavery on the grounds, and she has said she used to see them working the grounds at night, among many other experiences. At her current school (which is over 200 years old) she's been followed by spirits. She lived on campus her first year and a "little girl" used to visit her every night and keep her from sleeping.

Perhaps separate from this, or maybe not, she has had one bout of "hallucinations" about two years ago, where she was on a spiral downward and ended up in the ER. She had "shapes" following her that she was scared to death of. To my knowledge, the hallucinations have t happened before or since this episode, but her supernatural intuitition is always there. It seemed like things were Pretty quiet for a while now, even during a really bad fall which included a hospitalization for depression and suicidal ideation. But in the last two days (or more, she shared with me two days ago) she's had a presence that won't leave her alone and is scratching her at night, waking her up. She slept with me last night because she was scared. She woke up saying something that indicated to me it was bother her (could it be a bad dream?) and I touched her to remind her I was there and she quieted. I leave early, and she texted me that it scratched her after I left for work.

Ok, so this has never happened to me, but I do believe there are people out there that are open to the supernatural. What I'm sure of is that it's 100% real to her. Is this separate from her disorders or is this something anyone out there has heard from their child?

Wow - how scary that must be for both your DD and you.  Are there visible scratches on her? I'm personally kind of on the fence about super natural experiences as I'm the type that needs to see it to believe it.  But whatever is going on is for sure real to your DD... .

I do have a friend whose son (now in his 30s) has said he has seen ghosts for years.  In an effort to cope with it, he turned to hard drugs which she said he said only made it worse.  Since being off of them, he has less visions but still does from time to time. Scary.

Thank you for your reply. This was hard to write and I really value the opinions and feedback from my peer group on this forum. There is a s ratchet on her forehead which I saw. She said there were two separate ones on her abdomen but I didn't ask to see. Of course, the scratch could be a hangnail scratch in her sleep. It was very superficial. And I have always somewhat believed but Like you, lived on the fence because I need to see to believe. She's the reason ive become more open to the idea. She's not been BPD (unofficially)for two years, and that's about when we got the MDD and panic diagnosis. Before that, she was just my introverted kid with learning disabilities who was in touch with the spirit world sometimes. Her stories are so specific it's hard to discount.

In general, pwBPD (people with BPD) are highly intuitive which probably opens them up to the spiritual realm, I do believe that these things happen to people who are open to it.

Have you done any research to see if you can find someone to speak with your daughter and help get this figured out?

I think that's a really solid point. Thank you for taking the time to reach out. I have talked to her therapist about this, as has my daughter. She (therapist) is very open to the possibility of some people having succeptibility to the spiritual world, so my daughter is very comfortable discussing with her. When she's frightened is when her "gift" scares me, like now. I communicated with her therapist this a.m. To ask her to discuss this with her at my daughter's next appointment (they meet weekly). She said the "drama" from the encounter is from BPD and that part can be controlled using her strategies. Last night, for example, my daughter was sobbing and shaking because the spirit was "running back and forth in her bedroom". She had been trying to light her sage stick (which apparently wards them away), and was shaking so badly she couldn't strike a match. That is the BPD, according to her therapist. It's all so complex. I mean, as if depression and anxiety and the black and white thinking and the learning disabilities and anger outbursts and sleeplessness and dr visits and therapy and family drama aren't all enough. We have this too. I guess we all have the "and this too". I'm fortunate in that, so far, she isn't a cutter or addict of any kind. But we all have our demons, right?

I discussed this with my sister as we have a church up bringing.

It got to the stage with me that I was beginning to think that my ex was possessed.

The change in her voice and physical appearance when she was annoyed, and by that I don't mean raging,  was incredible.
